World's Top Seafood Importers

Datetime:2020-03-05

According to the latest data of Chinese customs on January 23, seafood imports totaled 106 billion Yuan ($15.3 billion) in 2019, up 39% from the previous year. With seafood imports doubling in two years (up 44 per cent in 2018), China is likely to overtake Japan (worth about $15bn in 2018) to become the world’s second-largest market for imported seafood, behind the US.

The above data do not include seafood products with HS codes 1604 and 1605 (details of this category have not yet been updated). In 2018, seafood imports under these two categories exceeded $315 million. If the amount of imports in 2019 were the same as in 2018, China’s total seafood imports would be around $15.6 billion.
